Beqa Yanuca Secondary School, on Beqa Island, off the South West coast of Fiji's main island, in 2023 has 15 teachers are providing classes for 110 students in classes ranging from years 9 to 13. 22 students from outer locations board during the week in 2 hostels. The school has 5.5 KVA (very loud) generator that supplies day time power for short periods on a needs basis and occasionally night power. The fuel, transport and maintenance cost of the generator is approximately FJD600 per month. The school has a very small solar system, powering a couple of rooms, but the lead acid batteries failed some time ago and the system provides some, insufficient, power when the sun is shining (certainly not adequate to protect a modern education). Teachers' homes have their own small generators. Some of the classrooms have adequate wiring that is to standard (installed when the small solar systems were installed), others require rewiring. The teachers' homes, hostels and dining rooms do not have adequate wiring - a new approximately 500m circuit will connect to those buildings. They will have new wiring installed. Installation of a new 5000W solar system with long lasting Lithium batteries is scheduled for main works during April 2023 (note battery delivery from the US will be end of April, so commissioning is scheduled for May). We look forward to updating progress and providing a summary (including full specifications panel) at the conclusion of the installation.
