PLEASE NOTE. This is a very early launch of a platform designed to update stakeholders and observers of Its Time solar schools’ projects. Current, historical and up-coming projects will be gradually added. As will the various information panels below. It is a considerable development project and we appreciate your patience as it evolves over the coming weeks. Almost certainly there will be a bug or two along the way - should you notice any issues or have ideas to improve the platform, your message is appreciated message via:

Term Reports

Beqa Yanuca Secondary School, on Beqa Island, off the South West coast of Fiji's main island, in 2023 has 15 teachers are providing classes for 110 students in classes ranging from years 9 to 13. 22 students from outer locations board during the week in 2 hostels.

The school has 5.5 KVA (very loud) generator that supplies day time power for short periods on a needs basis and occasionally night power. The fuel, transport and maintenance cost of the generator is approximately FJD600 per month.

The school has a very small solar system, powering a couple of rooms, but the lead acid batteries failed some time ago and the system provides some, insufficient, power when the sun is shining (certainly not adequate to protect a modern education). Teachers' homes have their own small generators.

Some of the classrooms have adequate wiring that is to standard (installed when the small solar systems were installed), others require rewiring. The teachers' homes, hostels and dining rooms do not have adequate wiring - a new approximately 500m circuit will connect to those buildings. They will have new wiring installed.

Installation of a new 5000W solar system with long lasting Lithium batteries is scheduled for main works during April 2023 (note battery delivery from the US will be end of April, so commissioning is scheduled for May). We look forward to updating progress and providing a summary (including full specifications panel) at the conclusion of the installation.

Our school commits to have a group of students spend at least 15 minutes, most weeks, picking up plastics. So, we keep our small patch on the earth as free of plastic as possible - its a small action we do to protect marine and other wildlife. We hope all schools in the world join us in doing the same.

Two thirds of the classrooms, office and library/computer areas have wiring that requires some repairs and refurbishment. One classroom block as no wiring and it receives new wiring and connection to the new circuit. An approximate 800m new circuit will connect the school solar system to 4 teachers’ homes, 2 hostels, a dining rooms, and ablution block - these building are relatively distant from each other, hence the significant size of the circuit and major digging works required. All rooms receiving new LED lighting and power sockets. 4 amp breakers are installed into the teachers' homes - this limits appliances to a maximum 960 watts (so no electric cook tops etc.), but capacity to use modest sized electrical appliances. That power limiting strategy means effective use of a reasonably sized school solar system and all in the community are very happy to have this level of 24-hour power supply.

Please note in images you will see 16 panels - our configuration to the charge controller is balanced 3 strings of 5 panels. An extra panels is added and not in use, so the system does not look like we are missing a panel.
